Egg donor programs help thousands of couples and individuals make their dreams come true every year. This incredible service consists of a woman donating her eggs to help someone else conceive a child as a part of ART (assisted reproduction treatment).
Doctors use IVF to fertilize the egg in the laboratory and implant it into the carrier’s womb. Sometimes, a gestational surrogate or donated semen might also be required for a successful pregnancy.
Here’s all you need to know:
Why do people need an egg donor?
Many couples and single women turn to egg donation for having a child due to their advanced maternal age. The quality of a woman’s eggs decreases over time and suffers a significant decline around the age of 37 and above.
Some of the most common types of people who use egg donation include couples where a woman has poor-quality eggs, women who don’t have ovaries, women who suffer from genetic problems that they don’t want to pass on, or gay men or single would-be fathers who want children of their own.
Requirements for egg donation
Egg donors must undergo rigorous medical and psychological screening to ensure they’re a good candidate. This includes an ovarian reserve assessment, physical exam, and medical history. Our prerequisites dictate that your age needs to be between 21-29, you must be a non-smoker, your BMI should be below 26, and you don’t have a history of alcoholism, depression, or drug abuse.
The egg donation process
Egg donors are injected with hormones that induce ovulation. Once the eggs are mature, a fertility doctor will use an ultrasound-guided needle to retrieve them. Labs usually try fertilizing several different eggs through IVF to create an embryo. This embryo is eventually transferred to the carrier’s uterus, where they must wait two weeks before taking a pregnancy test to see if the implantation was successful.
